The Education Years

Artwork- DVD cover for Kicking and Screaming (1995 film)

When all you have to do is sit in a corner and stare at a wall, does that impact your stream of consciousness?

"I'm the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul" had pierced my mind, body and soul a million times before it obliterated my so-called level of self-awareness. The notion of entering adulthood after puzzling years spent in school is bizarre. Late teens are about assuming you know everything while totally ignoring the fact that you know nothing. "Conventional is for adults," you say, while you thrive in the atmosphere of an empty yet chaotic reality. Turning pages of textbooks don't really live up to the magnitude of mindful knowledge but you're different—you keep a tab on getting the 100% experience of the "education years" although all the years are education years. These are the earthquake drills we'd been running for years. The absurd lists, plans, unenviable wardrobe, papers in the bin—it's all part of the preparation. The day you will graduate, a fear will cross your mind: "You shoot for the stars...you'll hit the roof" (Kicking and Screaming dir. Noah Baumbach). So, be like a golden retriever. Tell people to explain and flourish you with wisdom as if you were a golden retriever. Because what is the point of your sageness if you are incompetent to explain your learnings in simple words?

You're totally capable of staring at a wall and looking at your thoughts in the third person for two days...perhaps? Well, maybe that's a bit of a stretch. College years can be a confluence of luck and opportunity if you play your cards right. For all that is a strange concoction of theories and judgment, be the impatient, professional eye for uncertainty. Till then, turn the volume up.
