The Thing That Keeps Me Alive

An abysmal sea of nothingness

soaring up and down,

with isolated waves that crash on the rocks,

emanating hollow empty sounds,

sounds pulled out from the ends of the earth,

sounds that keep ringing inside you like your heartbeat after a run.

You would find nothing in these waves,

for long gone is the time when these seas teemed with urgency,

the tenderness of youth.

Long has gone

the time when these waves were the envy of gods and humans;

long has gone

the time when my hands were pricked

as I sewed the waters with my needle of rock,

again and again;

yet they broke into floods

again and again.
